Your Town Council
Peterlee Town Council was formed in 1974, the original Parish Council having been created in 1956. The Town Council offices were originally accommodated at Ridgemount House, Bede Way until the purchase of Shotton Hall in 1984 when the Civic Offices were moved into that building. During the course of major revitalisation works to the Hall later that year, the Council was housed in temporary accommodation in the I.T.e.C. building on the junction of Neville Road/Burnhope Way. Once revitalisation works were completed at Shotton Hall, the Civic Offices took up permanent residence in 1985.

The Town Council is one of the largest in the country and only one of 41 included in the Governments Best Value regime.
The Council is made up of 22 elected Councillors, representing the 5 wards of the Town as follows:
- Acre Rigg Ward (4 Members)
- Dene House Ward (4 members)
- Eden Hill Ward (5 Members)
- Howletch Ward (4 Members)
- Passfield Ward (6 Members)
