Bishop Auckland Town Council

After more than thirty years, Bishop Auckland has a Town Council once more.  The old Bishop Auckland Urban District Council was abolished in 1974 as part of radical reorganisation of local government and power was devolved under the name of 'Wear Valley District Council' whose offices were transferred to the Civic Centre in Crook in the 1980's.

The Town Council was established in May 2007 and it is the desire of all the councillors to serve and promote Bishop Auckland and to give the town a voice whenever it is needed.
All councillors live in Bishop Auckland and party-political considerations are very much secondary to the well-being of their town.

The Town Council has 11 elected Members currently comprised of 7 Labour, 1 Liberal Democrat and 3 Independents (Wear Valley Independent Group).

At the moment, the Town Council is based in an office in The Four Clocks Centre in Bishop Auckland and currently employs a full time Town Clerk and part time Assistant Town Clerk, along with an Admin Assistant.

Wear Valley District Council ceased to exist when the new Durham County Council came into effect on 1st April 2009 which now comprises the seven former district and borough councils.

It is now more important than ever for Bishop Auckland to have its local voice.
To this end, the Council is keen to work with businesses, schools and all other organisations throughout the area to devise and develop a strategy to support the town.

Bishop Auckland has a voice and is growing all the time.
